Roof Safety

while keeping your panels spotless is important, your safety on the roof is even more critical. A clean system isn’t worth risking a fall.

Assess the Roof First before stepping up a ladder, take a moment to assess the roof. Is it steep? Wet? Covered in debris? Even a small amount of dust or morning dew can make tiles extremely slippery. If the pitch is high or access is awkward, it may be safer to leave the job to professionals with proper fall-protection equipment.

Use the Right Safety Equipment, at minimum you want to wear non-slip footwear with good grip, for steeper roofs, safety harnesses and anchor points are strongly recommended. Professionals often use fall-arrest systems to comply with workplace safety standards.

Avoid Cleaning During Peak Sun. Solar panels can become very hot in direct sunlight. Cleaning early in the morning or late in the afternoon reduces the risk of heat stress and prevents rapid water evaporation, which can leave streaks. It also makes the surface safer to work on.

Be Mindful of Electrical Safety even when your system is connected to an inverter such as those from Fronius or SMA Solar Technology, the panels themselves can still generate electricity during daylight hours. Avoid spraying water directly into electrical components, and never tamper with wiring unless you’re a licensed professional.

Know what roof type you have and how to walk on it, roof with tin and concrete tiles are resilient and the risk or breaking anything is very low but terracotta tiles, especially those with moss bulid up, can crack and break very easily and will be a real issue when it rains next.

Don’t Work Alone whenever possible, have someone on the ground to stabilize the ladder and assist if needed. In the unlikely event of a slip or emergency, having help nearby makes a huge difference.

Solar panel cleaning helps maintain efficiency and prolong system life, but roof safety should always come first. If you’re unsure about access or conditions, hiring a professional solar cleaning service ensures the job is done effectively — and safely.
