Cleaning panels yourself seems like an easy option but there are some things to remember and avoid when cleaning

What to use and not use

Multiple solar panels installed outdoors under a clear blue sky.

Even thou solar panels are robust and are make to survive the elements there are still some things to consider before washing them

Use

  • Soft sponge, Microfibre cloth, or non abrasive cloth

  • Hose with gentle water flow

  • Bucket with clean, lukewarm water

  • Safety Equipment (Non-slip shoes, Safety Harness)

Don’t Use

  • High pressure jets (can damage the seals)

  • Harsh chemicals

  • Abrasive Materials (Steel wool, hard brushes)

Different types of build up

Moss and Lichen

This is a common build up that happens with solar panels and unfortunately will not just comes off with a light spray or in the rain, it will take some elbow grease to get off

We have found the best way to get rid of this is by spraying it lightly with some water and scraping them off the panel with a non-metalic scrapper.

Bird Droppings

Stubben spots like bird droppings can cause ‘hot spots’ on your panels and damage the cells below, this are a major cause of lost efficiency in panels.

If cleaning pnels yourself it is best to use a mild biodegradable detergent in a bucket of lukewarm water and scrubbing with a soft sponge.
